April Visit to Rufisque

A group of 14 women started an early Tuesday morning on the road to Rufisque. We arrived fairly early on the outskirts of Rufisque where we visited the atelier of Babacar Niang, Nulangee Design. Very interesting visit, to see with what small equipment he can make beautiful things. Now we know how he makes these baobab trees that sell so well in our Art Show!

The visit continued by car, to explore the place where the ghost of the Lebou of Rufisque lives. The french built a house there with swimming pool, now it is owned by Socosim (the cemetery) and completely deserted... a very strange place. People still make offerings there for all kinds of situations.

Then we continued to the old colonial part of town, rue Gambetta, full of horse carriages and colonial houses with small balconies (you have to look up to see it all). The catholic church from 1884, the beautiful train station as a reminder of the commercial past of Rufisque, center of the peanut trade. The remains of the wharfs in the sea (rows of sticks) that is approaching the town.

We finished the visit in the beautiful gardens of Jacaranda, on the way to Village des Tortues Lac Rose. After the dust and filth of Rufisque this was a sanctuary of green, flowers and peace!

February Visit to Servair

With a group of 16 ladies we went to Servair, the catering company at the aeroport of Dakar. It is not only catering for aeroplanes they dobut also the cleaning and supplying of airplanes. It is a big logistical operation, that we all know now!! Servair has 35 branches around the world; everywhere where Air France lands. The newest branch is in South Africa. There are roughly 160 persons working there, in shifts of 8 hours, around the clock. Friday evening/night especially, is very busy for them.

January Visit - Guided tour of Dakar

The January visit, was a guided tour through the center of Dakar. This time we started from the cathedral in the center. TIP: you can easily park your car there, for a small amount of money!!!We were a big group, 51 adults and 7 children. There were three guides so we split up in three groups. The group with Christine Dupoonnois as a guide had a very interesting walk because she knows a lot about the architecture and the history of the buildings in downtown. Marième and Malick Diawara, the other 2 guides, lead us past all the historical buildings but were less informed. After the 2 hours walk we visited an art exposition in the house of the french general behind Cercle de la Rade and had a wonderful luncheon at the restaurant of Cercle de la Rade (open for lunch but you have to make reservations 1 day before).

Tennis Tournament

Some ladies held a Tennis Tournament at Club Olympique in the first week of December 2008: Muriel, Cynthia, Maria, Janet, Mindy, Taniko, Naana, Amy - most of them are members of the DWG. All of them are 'hot' for tennis and playing together ant two of them leaving soon... Taniko and Janet.

Taniko played the final, with Cynthia, and lost - Maria and Muriel are the winners!!

Preparing for Art Show 2009...

DWG Visit to ‘Hôpital Principal de Dakar’

We were 17 women who attended this visit. We were welcomed by the director Colonel Boubacar Wade and his staff in the official “Salle d’honneur’ where he began our tour by a power point presentation.

The hospital started in 1884 after a yellow fever epidemic had killed the staff of the hospital in Gorée and the French had to look for a cleaner and healthier place to build a new hospital. The first buildings, linked to each other by arcades, are still there and form the heart of the hospital, which now covers 6 hectares (14.8 acres) and is bordered by the presidency on one side and the English embassy on the other.

After the introduction Dr. Wade and his staff showed us around and were very proud to show us the very modern MRI scan, the most powerful in Senegal, located in a newly renovated building. The scan is handled by very well-trained personnel, some of them by Siemens.

The hospital renovated another building with plans to have recovery rooms and where extracorporeal dialysis will be possible.

The hospital is very clean, personnel everywhere, in beautiful surroundings: gardens, trees, flowers, all done in an array of beautiful colors because the buildings’ painting is very well done.
The final building toured was the maternity ward (built in 1900) with its premature delivery unit. There were 35 babies in there with the smallest only weighing 800 grams!! And she had a chance to survive… It seems in Paris there are only 3 hospitals that can handle these ‘preemies’ and so all of us were amazed and baffled that these babies could survive in Dakar.

Dr. Wade offered us some juice and a very splendid view of the Plateau from the roof of the maternity, where the wind was blowing and the DWG plate was presented to him.

We were honored by the reception and we were glad to learn that Dakar had more medical possibilities than the Lebanese run hospitals.
